Project: Alternative Acne Treatments: The Effects of Natural Supplements and Chinese Herbal Medicine

Acne is a common skin disorder affecting approximately 633 million people globally, most of whom are teenagers and young adults. It can be difficult to treat, and many treatments in Western medicine have harsh side effects that significantly impact quality of life. Natural supplements and Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) offer a more holistic approach, providing potentially safer and cheaper ways for people to manage their acne. This project studied the effects of natural supplements (zinc and vitamin E) and CHM by exploring how they affect oil regulation, moisture absorption, and moisture retention in artificial skin. The results revealed that zinc was the most effective at reducing oil levels and improving moisture absorption and retention, followed by CHM, then vitamin E. These findings can give insight into how these treatments affect acne in real skin, highlighting an opportunity to integrate less invasive treatments and cultural traditions into mainstream acne care.
