If you are thinking about do a project that involves working with humans or animals, it is important to understand how to do ethical STEM. Before starting any work on your project, keep reading to see what extra steps you need to take. At the bottom of this page there is a wizard to help you figure out what which forms you need for your project. If you have any questions please contact usIf your project does not involve working with humans or animals you don't need to worry about this.

Working with Humans - Participation of Humans in Research

​

Are you going to be surveying or testing a set of participants as part of your project? If your project involves collecting data about humans, there are a few extra steps you need to take before you start. This is a very important part of your scientific research. A project that collects data from humans will fall under one of two categories: 

 

  1. Participation of Humans in Research - Low Risk (most projects fit in this category)

    • The risk of harm to participants is not greater or more likely than in everyday life

    • Includes most projects involving: surveys, exercise experiments, food and drink experiments, caffeinated beverage experiments, absorption through the skin projects

  2. Participation of Humans in Research - Significant Risk

    • Any project that isn't low risk is considered significant risk and must follow stricter rules

    • Must submit Research Plan to WMSF before beginning project, and must receive approval before starting the project

    • Projects involving drugs, invasive procedures or bodily tissues are automatically Significant Risk

Working with Animals - Use of Animals in Research
